LAFITTE STOP-MOTION

In June I began working with Lafitte on a stop-motion to showcase executive chef Russell Jackson's eclectic and unique style of cooking. I wrote a blog post with a web cam link the day of the shoot. After a long morning of shooting and countless hours editing and sweating the details with the help of Katherine and Laura from Revolver Studios here is the finished piece.

NEA AND NEW ORLEANS

This week and last I traveled to New Orleans to work with Closed System Media at The National Education Association’s (NEA) Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly. This was my first time to work with this client and to be in New Orleans. RA meeting hall during set up The work was long and involved, working with Closed System Media usually is. During the conference I spent most of my time ingesting photography from 3 great Florida based photojournalist’s; Calvin Knight, Scott Iskowitz and Rick Runion, into an efficient workflow with Photoshelter. I haven’t captioned and identified subjects on a daily basis since I studied photojournalism at The University of Kansas and worked at The Kansas City Star. My commercial work just doesn’t require embedded metadata other than a copyright or a licensing agreement. The NEA conference is in one large convention center where delegates vote on amendments to their constitutional bylaws and gather resource information. The NEA is the largest labor union in the United States representing over 3.2 million people and approximately 8,500 delegates from around the United States gathered in New Orleans. They use a method of debating and voting with a call and response method to pass or veto a measure. When the president or vice president asks those in favor to say ‘I’ as many as 8,500 delegate voices yell ‘I!’ The same roar can come for a ‘No’ vote. It’s a little jarring at first and leaves a lasting impression. The work this organization does is vital for public education to succeed. I’m a product of a good public education. However, the path our public schools have done down since I graduated in 1999 is saddening, thank you very much No Child Left Behind and The Bush Administration. I will keep the soap boxing brief but please support public education and email your representatives in Congress and the Senate to pass measures to increase public school funding on state and national levels. The NEA staff must be commended for all the hard work they put into this annual event and to the daily promotion of public education. I look forward to going to Chicago next year for the 2011 NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly. Martin O'Malley, Maryland's Governor RA Floor and Dennis Van Roekel, NEA President NEA Delegates exiting the RA Floor New Orleans was not what I expected. I assumed it would be humid. It was. I assumed there would be rampant debauchery in the French Quarter. There was. What I didn’t expect was to what degree the humidity and debauchery would be. At one point while walking around at night it was unclear if it was raining or if that was just the density of the atmosphere that was making my face moist. The Fourth Of July brought extra people and revelry onto Bourbon Street with it’s Hurricanes and Grenades to go. It was good to see New Orleans busy. Mother Nature (or Bp…) knock this city off its feet on a regular basis but it just keeps standing back up. It is a testament to the human spirit. The food in New Orleans was also not what I expected. I don’t know what I expected but I ran the gamete from a wonderful dinner at Cochon with a Hartford Zinfandel to fried crawfish at Coop’s Place and a breakfast of grits and debris at Mother’s. I’ve eaten very well over the last week and am looking for a great grits recipe to add a little New Orleans comfort to my San Francisco diet. Mother's Grits and Debris

WHITNEY AND WADE'S WEDDING

This weekend I returned to Kansas City to attend an old friend's wedding. Whitney and I met years ago when I was shooting a story for Women's Wear Daily in Kansas City. I have photographed her several times since, once for a self promotional piece on Evening Star Road outside of Lawrence, Kansas and for my 'White' project when I left Kansas City in 2005. It was an honor to see her marry such a wonderful man and good friend of mine, Wade Williamson. These two photos are just some of the shots I took during the evening. I thought them compelling enough to share before I pass the remaining photos onto the couple in July. Congratulations again to you both and thank you for such a wonderful time at the wedding. Whitney Williamson. Terry the father of the groom, Whitney and Joe the father of the Bride.

NEW SERIES PREVIEW

Sunday I shot some imagery for a new series. The new series is an exercise in non-static motion and duplication. My subject, Katherine and I took to the streets of The Tenderloin loosely inspired by the works of Robert Longo and the Roman Polanski film Repulsion to create these works. The final images will all twitch and move in the style of stop-motion animation found in my latest posts and work. The following are works in progress or stills from the finished pieces.
These are stills from the new work.

Please check out Revolver Studios on Facebook for more from Katherine.

STOP-MOTION LIVE

Tuesday, June 1st at 8:30 a.m. PST I will be shooting a stop-motion animation for Lafitte, a brand new and exciting restaurant from dissident chef Russell Jackson. We're going to be shooting in the restaurant and they have a web camera with a live feed into their kitchen. It's no accident that this camera happens to point right where we'll be shooting. Please check out THE CAMERA for all the madness that is stop-motion animation. A special thanks to Revolver Studios for the opportunity to create with such a culinary talent.

ACCELERATE

Last week I was in Las Vegas for work with Riverbed Technology. The company hosts an annual convention and this year I covered Accelerate 2010 for 4 days. This image is from the first day of set up. A special thanks to Alex Grossman, Jason Black, the Riverbed Executives and the event staff that put on such a colorful and informational event.

INKTANK

Several months ago while culling through a shoot I did with Kristin in December, I noticed a poignant nuance in a series of frames. I made a mental note of it and moved on. This week those images came back out again and became part of a new motion animation. By combining the images from my (th)ink tank images and the images from Dichotomy in December, I have put together a new animation called 'inktank'. This is the first in a series I'll be starting this summer after I return from work in New Orleans and Las Vegas. Please check out the video on YouTube or preferably through the new motion section on my site.

TIME

Last month Katherine Mathis of Revolver Studios and I set out on our first of soon to be many creative endeavors. With no prior history of collaboration or working together, just mutual respect for each others taste in art and literature, we agreed to make something creative out of an afternoon. That something formed into a 3 minute stop motion video shot over 3 hours and 30+ hours of editing.

(th)INK TANK

A few weeks ago I shot ink falling into a 10 gallon fish tank. The process of shooting just to make a beautiful image for no real purpose other than the act of creation is something I rarely get a chance to embrace. I plan to continue this series and incorporate the imagery onto a larger piece at a later date.

COLLABORATION : AD HOC

Friday I had a chance to shoot with Katherine Mathis. Katherine is a mutual friend who runs a marketing and branding company, Revolver Studios, and has a very well read and interesting view on art. We had tried to find the right inspiration and project to exercise our creative muscles with since late 2009 to no avail. Serendipity smiled and we both had a free afternoon but were without a plan for the end product. Throwing ourselves into the creative process we crafted a stop motion animation that happened completely organically on an ad hoc basis. Shooting stills for a stop motion animation is the first step and the editing process has yet to begin. I wanted to share the closing shot before next week brings me back into Sandbox Studio and the hustle of a new week begins.

SQUARESPACE SITE

I've been hard at work coding and uncoding, making and unmaking, remaking and unmaking, then coding again... it's been a little maddening. However, I'm proud to say my desire for a more interactive website with a unified cohesive web presence is almost complete. I still need to transfer a little bit more coding to the server but it's almost ready for the viewing public. For a preview please check www.brandonjosephbaker.squarespace.com.

TIME CHANGE

I always get a little sad when the time changes for the spring and summer months. I enjoy the shorter days. I just like being out at night more than the day. I do enjoy the light right in between night and day and the light right at day break. Magic hour. I couldn't sleep yesterday morning so I climbed to the rooftop to shoot my neighborhood from above right at day break.

CAST MONKEY SKULL

I took a little time today to shoot something new. This cast of a monkey skull I got from Blake Britton, an artist I photographed in Portland. I wanted to continue with the series I've been pursuing called Dichotomy however I don't think there is anything I can add to this series without becoming redundant. Onto something new it shall be. This is the last image I'll be posting for a while. I have to take sometime away from shooting to focus on marketing new business, print a new book and update my website. See you somewhere.

BROADWAY TUNNEL

In 2004 I took a cab from North Beach to Noe Valley with Tyler and Megan. There was something about that cab ride that I really loved. My guess is the speed we were traveling combined with the revelry earlier in the evening made such an impression on me. This is my homage to that night and to one of my favorite landmarks in San Francisco.
